Alpinmesse Innsbruck: An interview about trail running and sustainability

Alpinmesse 2023: sustainable trail running, protecting nature and why I ran 1,000 km to Copenhagen instead of flying.

Running instead of flying: my Alpinmesse interview

In 2023, Alpinmesse Innsbruck invited me to discuss a subject particularly close to my heart: How can we make mountain sports sustainable?

Trail running with a sense of responsibility

As an ultra trail runner, I spend a lot of time in the mountains. They give me strength, but also a responsibility to protect these landscapes. In the interview, I talk about how trail runners can leave a minimal footprint, and why we still need to be more mindful of our environment.

1,000 kilometres to Copenhagen, on foot

One story in particular made an impression: instead of flying to a conference in Copenhagen, I ran there. 1,000 kilometres in 20 days. It was a sporting adventure, but also a statement: There are alternatives to flying if we are willing to think differently.

Bringing conservation and mountain sports together

My position is clear: I support protected areas, especially for wildlife. At the same time, I believe in education rather than bans. People who understand why certain areas need protection will act more responsibly of their own accord.

Training on your doorstep

One practical tip from the interview: I mainly train close to home in Lower Austria. In one season, I ran more than 150 repetitions on my local hill. You do not always have to travel far to train well. It is both sustainable and efficient with your time.
